Fez

June 27, 2010

Have you ever worn a fez? It’s quite uncommon here in the States, but in other parts of the world (particularly the Middle East) it can be seen from time to time. Researching quickly on Wikipedia, I learned that it was once the official male headgear of the Ottoman Empire, and is part of the traditional clothing of Cyprus — completely random facts, but ones that make it all the more interesting.

Walking in Harlem one day, I found a stand filled with incense, beaded jewelry and, hiding in the back, stacks of colorful fezzes. They were only $15 each, so I bought one. Mine is slightly discolored from sun exposure, and in hindsight I wish I got another color, but I think it’s pretty cool :)

I’ve seen hats like that before, but I never knew they were called a “fez” or that they’re commonly worn in Cyprus…so fascinating! Great post!

Cool hat! I like it better when you simle instead of giving that “hurry up and take the picture already” look (or whatever look that is). You have a nice smile Mistah!!

LOL! A lot of my friends give me trouble for my “model” face :) I’m reluctantly learning that smiling is ok, and that I should leave moody modeling to the professionals :)

LOL …Yep, you should listen to your friends, but I could totally see you being a model. Nice features you have. =) Take care!

Yeah, I agree, I especially love your recent picture with the diesel shirt and how energetic you were and the smile you had. Very interesting information about the fez, I had heard about it but didn’t know too much about it because like you said they aren’t worn too much in the States.
